An imagined coffee shop born out of my love for cafes and knitting. The "magic loop" in knitting refers to a method of using circular needles of any length to knit up small, round projects like socks or sleeves – the term is used here to also evoke the magic experienced amongst friends when gathered around a table.
Diver is the story of a curious young girl who meets and forms a friendship with an elderly diver ("haenyeo") on the island of Jeju in South Korea. The book features a combination of collaged paper and digitally-drawn illustrations, and is bound by hand. The book also has an informational booklet about the haenyeo included in the back cover.
The book follows the young girl's perspective on the left hand pages, and the haenyeo's narration on the right. When the two meet and the haenyeo teaches the young girl about diving, their connection is symbolized through full spreads of their underwater adventures printed on translucent glassine paper.
